The Ada County Highway District (ACHD) is preparing to begin its yearly chip seal road maintenance circuit. Chip seal is a cost-effective method of extending the life of asphalt roads by applying a layer of liquid asphalt and then covering it with small stones. This process helps to seal the cracks and prevent water from seeping into the road, which can lead to potholes and other damage.
ACHD plans to chip seal approximately 120 miles of roads this year, starting in May and continuing through October. The work will be done on roads throughout the county, including major thoroughfares and neighborhood streets.
Motorists can expect to see chip seal crews working on the following roads this year:
* **Boise:** Overland Road, Eagle Road, and State Street
* **Meridian:** Meridian Road, Cherry Lane, and Ustick Road
* **Nampa:** 12th Avenue Road, Franklin Boulevard, and Caldwell Boulevard
* **Caldwell:** Main Street, Logan Street, and Arthur Street
ACHD crews will be working during the day and night to complete the chip seal work as quickly as possible. However, motorists should expect some delays and are advised to use alternate routes if possible.
During the chip seal process, traffic will be limited to one lane in each direction. Motorists should also be aware that the new chip seal surface will be slippery, especially when wet. Drivers should slow down and use caution when driving on newly chip sealed roads.
Once the chip seal is complete, ACHD crews will sweep up any loose stones and apply a fog seal to help protect the new surface. The fog seal will also help to reduce the amount of dust and debris that is kicked up by vehicles.
Chip seal is an important part of ACHD's road maintenance program. By extending the life of asphalt roads, chip seal helps to save taxpayers money and keep our roads safe.
Here are some additional tips for motorists driving on newly chip sealed roads:
* Slow down and use caution.
* Avoid driving on the new surface if possible.
* If you must drive on the new surface, be sure to keep your windows up to avoid getting stones in your car.
* Be aware of motorcycles and bicycles, which may be more difficult to see on the new surface.
* Allow extra following distance between your vehicle and the vehicle in front of you.
* Be patient and expect delays.
ACHD appreciates your cooperation during the chip seal process. By following these tips, you can help to ensure the safety of yourself and others and help to keep our roads in good condition.
