CINCINNATI (WXIX) - After a report of a loose tiger in Cincinnati, Ohio, on Wednesday, police conducted an extensive search but were unable to locate the animal. Authorities are now asking residents to be cautious and report any suspicious sightings.
The sighting was first reported around 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in the Roselawn neighborhood of Cincinnati. A witness claimed to have seen a large, striped animal resembling a tiger in the area of Reading Road and Congress Avenue.
Responding officers searched the area for several hours, including with the assistance of a helicopter. However, no tiger was found.
"We have not found any evidence of a tiger being loose in the city," said Cincinnati Police Lt. Steve Saunders. "We have conducted an exhaustive search and have not been able to locate the animal."
Saunders said that police are continuing to investigate the incident and are asking residents to be vigilant.
"If you see anything that looks like a tiger, please do not approach it," said Saunders. "Call 911 immediately."
The Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden has also issued a statement saying that none of their animals are missing. The zoo is located about five miles from where the tiger was reportedly sighted.
"We are aware of the report of a loose tiger in Cincinnati," said the zoo in a statement. "We have checked all of our animals and they are all accounted for."
The zoo said that they are working with Cincinnati police to investigate the incident.
Local residents are being advised to take precautions in case the tiger is still loose.
"Keep your pets indoors and be aware of your surroundings," said Saunders. "If you see anything that looks suspicious, please call 911."
The Cincinnati Police Department is asking anyone with information about the tiger to call their non-emergency line at 513-765-1212.
