LOS ANGELES – The Indiana Fever overcame a double-digit halftime deficit to defeat the Los Angeles Sparks 78-73 at Crypto.com Arena on Friday night, securing their first win of the 2024 season.
Trailing by 11 points at the break, the Fever rallied in the second half, led by the outstanding performances of Aaliyah Boston and Victoria Vivians. Boston, the reigning Rookie of the Year, dominated the paint with 22 points and 12 rebounds, while Vivians contributed 19 points.
The Fever's defense also played a crucial role in the victory, limiting the Sparks to just 38% shooting from the field. Azurá Stevens led the Sparks with 18 points, but it was not enough to overcome the Fever's relentless pressure.
Indiana's victory marks a significant turnaround from their season-opening loss to the Dallas Wings. The Fever struggled offensively in that game, but they showed marked improvement in their ball movement and decision-making against the Sparks.
Coach Marianne Stanley praised her team's resilience and determination. "We knew we were capable of a lot more," she said. "We came out in the second half with a lot of energy and focus. We made some adjustments defensively, and our offense started clicking."
Vivians echoed Stanley's sentiments. "We had a lot to prove after the first game," she said. "We knew we had to be better, and we came out here and showed it. It feels great to get our first win."
The Sparks, who were hoping to build on their victory over the Atlanta Dream, were disappointed by the loss. However, Coach Curt Miller remained optimistic about his team's potential.
"We had some lapses defensively in the second half," Miller said. "We need to find a way to close these games out. But I believe in this group. We'll learn from this and come back stronger."
The Fever's victory is a promising sign for their season. With a talented and experienced roster, they have the potential to challenge the top teams in the WNBA. Their next game is on Sunday against the Las Vegas Aces, while the Sparks will face the Phoenix Mercury on Monday.
