Shane Lowry shot a record-tying 62 in the second round of the PGA Championship on Friday to move into contention at Southern Hills Country Club. The Irishman birdied five of his first six holes and added three more on the back nine to match the lowest round ever shot in the championship.
Shane Lowry credited the good vibes from his victory with Rory McIlroy at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans for his record-tying 62 in the second round of the PGA Championship on Friday.
"It was a great week in New Orleans, and I think that kind of carried over into this week," Lowry said. "I'm feeling good about my game, and I'm just trying to take it one shot at a time."
Lowry, who is tied for third place at 8-under 132, birdied five of his first six holes and added three more on the back nine to match the lowest round ever shot in the championship.
"I hit a lot of good shots today," Lowry said. "I putted well, and I made some good decisions."
Lowry's round was all the more impressive considering the difficult conditions at Southern Hills Country Club. The course was playing long and tough, and the wind was gusting up to 25 mph.
"It was a tough day out there," Lowry said. "But I just tried to stay patient and take advantage of the opportunities I had."
Lowry's victory at the Zurich Classic was his first PGA Tour win since 2019. He said that the win has given him a lot of confidence.
"It's always nice to get a win," Lowry said. "It gives you a lot of confidence, and it makes you believe that you can win again."
Lowry will play in the third round of the PGA Championship on Saturday. He will be paired with Scottie Scheffler, who is the No. 1 player in the world.
"It's going to be a tough weekend," Lowry said. "But I'm looking forward to the challenge."
Lowry's round was the highlight of a day that saw several players shoot low scores. Will Zalatoris and Cameron Young each shot 63, and Scheffler shot a 64.
The low scores were a result of the soft conditions on the course. The greens were receptive, and the fairways were relatively wide.
"The course is playing a little easier than it did yesterday," Lowry said. "But it's still a tough test."
The third round of the PGA Championship will be played on Saturday. The leaders will tee off at 1:45 p.m. ET.
